Equine therapy, also known as Hippotherapy, comes from the word “hippos” meaning horse in Greek. This therapy is the use of a horse in a therapeutic method. It can include activities like grooming which builds a bond and trust between the horse and the patient. Another very common part of Equine Therapy is horseback riding. Studies show that spending time around animals helps to lower blood pressure and increases oxytocin levels. Therapies involving animals also reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. These combined allow for better self-regulation, developing trust when a Veteran may otherwise struggle, and provide the Veteran with feelings of connection.

Veterans who have PTSD are often hyper aware of their surroundings, horses are also and depend on non-verbal cues while having an amazing ability to understand humans. Riding a horse successfully and comfortably means being in tune to the horse and the horse being in tune to you.
